Ruined

Posted on December 19th, 2008 at 10:13pm - Comment on 'Ruined'.

I put a lot of thought into what I was going to get people for Christmas and for my sister, I decided to get her some extra RAM, since she's always moaning about her laptop being slightly on the slow side.
Also, it would be funny to watch her open up that particular present and see the look on her face while she tries to figure out WTF it might be.

But. She ruined it. Her laptop died. Basically, the colours had managed to invert themselves and you couldn't access Windows at all - not even in any of the Safe Modes. I reinstalled Windows and installed some software which inverted the colours back (until I could figure out the problem and fix it). I went to connect it to the internet via our LAN connection but although it would recognise and connect to the network, it wouldn't take a blind bit of notice of the internet.
I restarted it to enter the BIOS to see if I can fix that little colour issue and it appears that BIOS has buggered off and left me. No matter which buttons I press, I can't get to it.

But none of this matters because now the screen has gone "weird". Everything looks really faded and washed out, even when I change the screen settings to SUPER DUPER HIGH CONTRAST.

She's really upset about it because she's now lost all her music for her iPod. I think I might just make her unwrap the RAM for Christmas, before sending it back. :)

Sick again

Posted on December 6th, 2008 at 10:11pm - Comment on 'Sick again'.

There's been this mild flu bug going around work for about a month. I was all smug because I hadn't caught it yet. Then on Tuesday, I woke up with the first sign: a sore throat. The kind of sore throat you get when you've snored a little too much for a little too long the night before. Then you get sinus aches, quickly followed by tiredness, headaches and a sniffley nose.

Up until Wednesday evening, I felt fine; slight cold coming, no problem. Woke up Thursday feeling rather "icky". By the end of the evening, I had to go home early because I felt really bad and absolutely knackered.

As melodramatic as it sounds, I woke up on Friday wanting to die; every inch of my body hurt. I got to work and, half an hour later, went back home again. I collapsed in bed at ten and was woken up at about half one because Myke phoned me, wanting to know if I was still breathing and stuff. (I was but barely - my nose was totally blocked.)
Other than what I've just written, I don't remember what happened on Friday and that's kinda scary.

I got myself up early this morning and into the city centre because I only had like, TWO presents to get and FIVE cards and THAT'S IT! Christmas shopping = done!

Well, that was a bloody mistake. I got in town at about twenty to ten and finished at around half eleven, so I wasn't in a LONG time. And I wouldn't have been in for so long but MY GOD, THE QUEUES.
(Like, Woolworths is closing down and currently has a 50% off sale. I was in there for ten, so it's still pretty early - the shop has only been open for about an hour. As I walked in, I saw that the queue stretched from one side of the shop to the other.)
Anyway. By the time I was walking to the bus stop to catch the bus home, my head was hurting, my eyes were hurting, my lips were hurting where the skin's all split (it hurts to TALK), my neck, throat, shoulders, arms, torso, sides, hands, legs, feet and every other part of me were hurting to a point where I wanted to lie down and die or something. But none of this pain was anywhere near as bad as my back.
So yes, lots of pain. I did a bad thing for my poor liver and took two paracetamol, followed by two "fast-acting" ibuprofen and that only took the edge off the pain. :\

I paid for my little excursion today but it was worth it - I don't have to worry about Christmas anymore. :)

Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go and collapse in bed again. :)

Mirrors

Posted on November 23rd, 2008 at 1:10pm - Comment on 'Mirrors'.

I watched Mirrors on Friday evening. My sister watched it on her birthday and said it was good and some of the girls from work have also watched it, one of which was getting nightmares about it weeks later.

Now I've sat through some spectacularly bad horror films in my time - the Unnamable^, Teeth^, etc - but Mirrors? Has to be right up there with the crappiest of the crap horror films.

Basically, it's about - well, mirrors. People see weird stuff in them and blah blah blah. Kiefer Sutherland comes along and starts to see the weird stuff and goes and talks to someone about it (his wife I think?) and it jumps from "I'm seeing weird shit in the mirrors" to "they're showing me another dimension". What? Where did you get that?

And. Mr Sutherland - who is normally a good actor - did such a bad acting job that even I, someone who skived off every single drama lesson and can't even keep a straight face when I'm trying to wind someone up, could have done a better job.

What a waste of time. I watched it Friday and I'm still annoyed that I wasted what could have been good, quality Farscape time. :(
